RFID TECHNOLOGY TO MONITOR ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS

PR.E.SE. RFID wireless batteryless Sensors for predictive maintenance

PR∙E∙SE∙ is a wireless, battery-less, and 0-maintenance solution that takes advantage of the RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) technology, and that allows the temperature monitoring of electrical plants in a smart and innovative way.

It is very important to monitor electrical systems, in order to prevent overheating, avoid thermal failure, and set a reliable predictive maintenance plan.

This innovative technology aims at empowering the predictive maintenance strategies, thanks to the integration into the IoT architecture, and overcomes the limits imposed by common traditional technologies. The benefits are many:

  • Sensors are small-size sensors are available in different shapes and attachment methods
  • The ID number is extremely reliable and prevents misreading
  • Wireless and battery-less monitoring permits to avoid cabling, thus saving costs
  • Many sensors, ideally hundreds, can be installed for each component
  • There is the possibility to integrate other sensors into the monitoring system, such as humidity sensors
  • The system is extremely stable, and easy to debug

PR.E.SE. SOLUTION

RFID technology is now widespread and used in many sectors, but C.R. Technology Systems has introduced this solution in electrical equipment. This research is pioneering, as RFID technology has been implemented for the first time in electrical energy systems.

Thanks to the effort and knowledge of our team, the constant investment in R&D, and the precious support of our partner Radio6ense we have developed PR.E.SE. solution. It is the acronym for PRedictive Electrical SEnsors and is the birth name of our solution based on the use of RFID sensors.

We presented this solution at the EM-Power Intersolar Exhibition in October 2021 and in May 2022 we have been selected as a finalist in the challenge The Smarter E AWARD and had the opportunity to show our solution at a conference.

A SUSTAINABLE PROJECT

PR.E.SE. is also a sustainable solution, as its modular and flexible features are a technological tool to achieve high performance and minimize damages.

Benefits to the environment include:

  • Extend the system life cycle and components, whose dispersion would damage health and the environment
  • Requalify the plant, through retrofit solutions
  • Protect workers against risks of system malfunctions
  • Increase the predictive maintenance system, limiting waste of energy
  • Remote monitoring to avoid travels on-site and immediate intervention

PR.E.SE. APPLICATIONS

We have studied this solution in different applications.

Electrical switchgear

PR.E.SE. can be integrated into medium-voltage electrical switchgears. The study has been carried out in our medium-voltage (MV) air-insulated (AIS) Normal Clad switchgear.

We opted for different shape sensors that better suit the surface features of the various compartments: cable compartment, busbar compartment, and circuit-breaker compartment.

Photovoltaic

In a photovoltaic, it is very important to monitor the switching station connected to the electrical panels. The e-house is generally divided into separated areas: inverter room, MV room, transformer room.

Wind farm

In wind farms, it is fundamental to monitor the temperature in the e-house, cablings, and the wind turbine, specifically in the gearbox and the generator, in order to avoid thermal failure.
